Pac-12 Betting Preview

The Pac-12 Betting Preview is a fun one as this is truly an interesting conference this year with a plethora of teams with 2nd-year coaches and overall, a conference championship that is up for grabs between maybe 5 or 6 teams. Utah seems to be the consensus to come out of the South and it is about split on who you ask regarding the North with Oregon and Washington.

South Division

conference record, full record

  1. Utah, 10-2, 7-2
  2. USC, 8-4, 7-2
  3. Arizona State, 6-6, 4-5
  4. UCLA, 5-7, 4-5
  5. Colorado, 5-7, 2-7
  6. Arizona, 4-8, 2-7

North Division

conference record, full record

  1. Oregon, 10-2, 7-2
  2. Washington, 10-2, 7-2
  3. Washington State, 8-4, 6-3
  4. Stanford, 7-5, 6-3
  5. Cal, 4-8, 2-7
  6. Oregon State, 2-11, 1-8

North Divison (Pac-12 Betting Preview)

2018 over/under win total: 8.5

2018 regular season record: 8-4

The expectations for Oregon are through the roof with Justin Herbert, who is a Heisman favorite, to lead this team to the Pac-12 championship game this year. They’ll have a test week 1 against an Auburn right off the bat and this could really show us what the Ducks are made of. We will have to see if the expectations are too high for this team and outweigh their talent. Their toughest conference games are on the road games at Stanford, USC, and Washington (full schedule here). I am high on the Ducks this year as they may have the best QB in all of the college football with. This is an over play I feel very confident about and actually, I have the Ducks going 10-2 this year. Even if they lose to Auburn, I still feel good about the Ducks hitting ay least 9 wins.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 8.5 (-145), under 8.5 (+125)

Pac-12 Betting Preview
Jacob Eason, Seattle Times

2018 over/under win total: 10.5

2018 regular season record: 9-3

Washington lost star quarterback and leader of the Huskies with Jake Browning. Also, lost star running back Myles Gaskin to the draft also. But there are high hopes at QB this year with Georgia transfer Jacob Eason who is ready to make a name for himself. Huskies start of the season against Eastern Washingon, Cal, Hawaii & BYU. They should be able to start the season off at 4-0 before they jump into conference play with two tough match-ups against USC and at Stanford. They host Oregon, which could be the biggest game of the year in the Pac-12 and will most likely decide the North. They also play Utah which will be a tough test (full schedule here).

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 9.5 (-125), under 9.5 (-105)

Washington State

Pac-12 Betting Preview
Max Borghi, Spokesman-Review

2018 over/under win total: 6

2018 regular season record: 10-2

Washington State is a sneaky team this year and will be under the radar. Gage Gubrud will be behind center for the Cougars, an Eastern Washington transfer who put up great numbers in the Big Sky. They also have sophomore Max Borghi back at RB who was a standout as a true freshman last year. Most of the Cougars’ toughest games are on the road as they play at Utah, Arizona State and Oregon (see full schedule here). As always, the Cougars end the season against Washington in the Apple Cup (Road). I have the Cougars landing right at 8 wins, but I think it is more likely for them to end up at 9 wins vs 7. They should start the season off 3-0 with an easy non-conference schedule.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 8 (-120), under 8 (-110)

2018 over/under win total: 8.5

2018 regular season record: 8-4

Stanford has the toughest first 4 games of any team in the Pac-12 as they face Northwestern, USC, UCF and Oregon. They also end the season against familiar foe Norte Dame (full schedule here), the season finale at home against Notre Dame, and not to mention a tough game vs Washington also. Bryce Love is gone to the NFL and they will have to find production in other ways. Costello will be back behind center and will have some targets at wideout with Brown and Wedington returning. The defense should be stout for the Cardinal also. This is a tough schedule and I don’t think the Cardinal are any better than they were the previous season. I have them going 7-5 with a bowl birth. Take the juice here at -150 and play the under.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 6.5 (-145), under 6.5 (+115)

Pac-12 Betting Preview
Evan Weaver, Cal Athletics

2018 over/under win total: 6.5

2018 regular season record: 7-5

California is going to have a tough season this year but will have one of the top defenses in the Pac-12 lead by Evan Weaver. Chase Garbers will be back at QB, who has shown he can make plays but also will throw interceptions in vital situations. The Golden Bears have three tough road tests in their first six games at Washington, Ole Miss, and Oregon and I don’t think they win one of these games. They also face Utah, Stanford, and UCLA on the road. They also have USC and Washington State at home. This is an easy under win total play as I see the ceiling for the Bears at 5 wins. I actually have them going 4-8 and I love this under play.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 5.5 (-135), under 5.5 (+105)

Oregon State

2018 over/under win total: 2

2018 regular season record: 2-10

Beavers start of the year vs Oklahoma State at home, then Hawaii on the road, and Cal Poly. Cal Poly may be their only win for a while as they face Washington, Arizona, Washington State, and Oregon to end the season (full schedule here). Jake Luton will bt the QB after Conor Blount transferred to Eastern Kentucky. Beavers will land right at 2 wins and maybe have a ceiling of 3 wins. 2 wins is exactly where I have Oregon State at but I will actually go with over 2 wins in this case. Either way, it won’t be a good year for the Beavers.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 2.5 (+130), under 2.5 (-150)

South Divison (Pac-12 Betting Preview)

Pac-12 Betting Preview
Covey, Salt Lake Tribune

2018 over/under win total: 7.5

2018 regular season record: 9-3

The Utah Utes won the Pac-12 South last year and are the favorites to come out of the South. They open the season on a Thursday night at BYU where they are 6 points favorites, then Northern Illinois and Idaho State. They should start the season off 3-0 but then have two tough conference games against USC and Washington State (full schedule is here). The Utes will look for revenge on Nov 2 against a Washington team that beat them twice last year. Quarterback Tyler Huntley missed the last 5 games of 2018 with a broken collarbone. He led Utah to a 4–0 last season and will be back from the start of the season. Britain Covey will be back for the Utes as a receiver and will be paramount, usually in the slot, for this Utah offense. I am high on the Utes this year and I think they have a big season. The South Division will not be as tough this year and this will get them to a 10-2 season.

2019 over/under win total prediction- over 9 (-155), under 9 (+125)

2018 over/under win total: 8.5

2018 regular season record: 5-7

USC has there isn’t an easy game on their 2019 schedule with non-conference contests against defending Mountain West champion Fresno State, BYU and Notre Dame. They should be able to start the season off at 3-0, but then they face Utah and travel to Washington all in September. USC has the second-toughest schedule, behind South Carolina (see schedule here). Graham Harrel, the former quarterback under Leach at Texas Tech, is very familiar with the spread offense. They will need J.T Daniels to step up at QB if they want to compete for the Pac-12 South Crown. I think he will excel this season under Graham Harrell at OC, and another year under the offense. I have the Trojans going 8-4 this season but wouldn’t be surprised if they end up at 7-5 with how tough the schedule is.

2019 over/under win total prediction- over 7 (-130), Even (+120)

Pac-12 Betting Preview
Eno Benjamin, Sun Devils Athletics

Arizona State

2018 over/under win total: 4.5

2018 regular season record: 7-5

Arizona State exceeded expectations in Herm Edwards first year as head coach, leading his team to a bowl game (a loss to Fresno State). The Sun Devils have a tough game against Michigan State, in a revenge spot for Sparty. They also have to play Oregon and Washington State (both at home) and also USC at home too. They face Utah on the road, and the Sun Devils will need huge games from guys such as Eno Benjamin, returning at running back (see full schedule here). N’keal Harry is gone at WR to the draft, and the Devils will need to replace his productivity. With the over at +135, I will take the over and hope for the best (although I think they end up at 7-5 again).

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 7 (+135), under 7 (-165)

2018 over/under win total: 5.5

2018 regular season record: 3-9

Chip Kelly’s first season at UCLA ended at 3-9. His team didn’t quite grasp the offense but there should be an improvement in year two. The Bruins have to travel to Cincinnati in their opener (which will be a tough game) and Oklahoma (Home). They also play Washington State, Stanford, Utah, USC (full schedule here). The Bruins will be lead by Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who came in early last year due to injury. RB Josh Kelly is back also, and both of them need to produce for the Bruins to be competitive this year. I have the Bruins going 5-7 this season.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 6 (-110), under 6 (-120)

Laviska Shenault, Denver Post

2018 over/under win total: 5

2018 regular season record: 5-7

Coach Mike MacIntyre is gone and Mel Tucker now takes over in Boulder. Mel will improve the Buffs on the defensive side of the ball but their schedule is brutal. It is actually the 6th toughest in all of college football. Colorado plays Nebraska in Week 2, and plays at Oregon, at Washington State, Stanford, Washington, and Utah. I have the Buffs winning against Colorado State and Air Force to start the season. They will give Nebraska a run for their money at home (Huskers will probably be favored by 8ish points). They need to beat Arizona, and either Stanford or UCLA to get to 4 wins. I think they can win 2 of 3 of these as Colorado will have a solid offensive attack with one of the best wide receivers in football (Laviska Shenault). Montez is back at QB and Colorado will have to win games in shootouts this year. I have Colorado going 5-7 and the over at -150.

2019 over/under win total prediction: Over 4 (-150), Under 4 (+130)

2018 over/under win total: 8

2018 regular season record: 5-7

Another second-year coach in the Pac-12 with Kevin Sumlin and the Wildcats. Khalil Tate is back, which I predicted, and will look to have a solid senior season. Some question if he will be a WR at the next level but will play QB this season. Arizona plays at Hawaii on Aug. 24, which is the second opener on the 24th behind Miami vs Florida earlier in the day. They have to play nine straight games which is a huge disadvantage but that is how the schedule shapes up. The Wildcats have to play Washington, USC (Away) and at Stanford in three straight weeks. They also have to play at Oregon (Away), Utah (Home) and Arizona State (Away) to end the season. This line is a little high to me and I have the Wildcats losing to Arizona State the last game of the year and going 4-8, falling two games under the projected line.

2019 over/under win total prediction: over 6.5 (-105), under 6.5 (-125)

Ultimately, I have the Utah Utes and Oregon Ducks facing off for the Pac-12 crown, and Oregon winning with a potential berth to the College Football Playoff. I wouldn’t be surprised if Washington makes their way in from the North but Utah will be coming out of the South.
