MACtion is back and here are the 6 games below with some quick leans and picks. With all 12 of these teams playing their first game of the season, I would keep the volume low as there is going to be uncertainty with lots of new QBs, and new faces on both sides of the ball.
Eastern Michigan vs Kent State (-4, 66.5)
This line opened up at +6.5 for Eastern Michigan and the total at 66.5. Eastern Michigan returns 44% of their returning production from last year which ranks 124 out of 130. Kent State is at 62% which is 73rd for the same metric. Dustin Crum at QB for Kent State can sling the ball and make plays with his feet. I like for Kent State to cover -4 and for this to go under. The line move does scare me a tad as a I don’t quite understand the move but their is no doubt who the better team is in this one and they should be able to win this by a TD.
Western Michigan vs Akron (-20.5, 52.5)
This line opened up at at -17 and moved to 20.5, and the total opening up at 56. Akron didn’t win a game last year which is probably the main reason why you are seeing a line move that has almost crossed through three key numbers. I will bet Akron +21 if it gets there but I have a feeling some sharp money will come in on the Zips before kickoff. Currently, you are seeing bets about 50/50 but 75% of the money on the Broncos. I like WMU this year in the MAC but the question is what type of Akron team do we see tonight and throughout the season as a whole.
Buffalo vs NIU (-14, 52.5)
Big line move after the Bulls of Buffalo opened up at -9.5 and currently sit at 2 TD favorites over the Huskies. The Bulls last season lead the MAC with rushing attempts on over 70% of their offensive plays being rush attempts. I don’t think they crack 70% again this season, but it is no secret their strategy headed into this one. I do like Buffalo still at 14, but anything over -14 would be a lean to Northern Illinois. I like the under here as I don’t think NIU puts up a lot points. Expect a 31-17 type of score in this one.
Ball St vs Miami-OH (PK, 55.5)
Miami-OH is defending champs in the MAC from last season and this match-up against the Cardinals, who had the number 1 ranked offense in the MAC, will be the best match-up of the day. This line opened at +3 but now is a pick’em and the total has only moved up a .5 of a point. Ball State loss a few games last season and were a lot better than their 5-7 record showed. The Cardinals return 16 seniors and have all the confidence this season to win the MAC. Miami-OH also returns several seniors with around 73% of production returning. Miami-OH has a balanced offensive attack and will really rely on their defense to win this one. I like for the Cardinals to win in a close one with a score of 30-28 and the over hitting.
Ohio vs CMU (+3, 55.5)
The Bobcats and Chippewas face off where there is a new face at QB for CMU. Daniel Richardson will get the start tonight, who leads Miami Dade County in all time passing yards and passing touchdowns. This is notable especially if you look at some of the names to come through there. You might ask why he ended up at CMU over a bigger school and that is because of his 5ft 10 height. Make no mistake, this guy is good and had 3 appearances last season to get his feet wet. Coach Jim McElwain has been great at developing QBs in the past as head coach dating back to his time at Colorado State. Luckily for Richardson, he will have some play makers around him with Kobe Lewis at RB and Kalil Pimpleton at WR. I fired this up at +1 for CMU and is has moved to +3, and I ultimately think this line move is the public concerned of a back-up QB starting because starting QB David Moore is out with a PED suspension. This is no surprise as the public bet on the Bobcats seeing a back-up QB starting for CMU. I like for CMU to win this one outright with a score of 27-21.
BGSU vs Toled0 (-24, 62.5)
Last but, well maybe least, we have Bowling Green facing Toledo. Toledo is favored by -23.5 with an opening line of -18. Toledo necessarily doesn’t have a high powered offensive, but this spread is more speaking to how bad Bowling Green was on offensive last season. They ranked 120th in passing yards last season out of 130 teams and that is ahead of 3-4 teams that run a primarily option attack. Luckily for the Falcons, they have a transfer QB Matt McDonald, starting tonight. While their is a lot of uncertainty on him, as he only played in 2 games at BC, he was outstanding at Mission Viejo, which had QB’s like Mark Sanchez and Jordan Palmer come through there. But with how bad BGSU was last year offensively, this has to be upgrade in my book. Toledo returns 71% of their production include three QBs in Eli Peters, Carter Bradley & Dequan Finn. It is 2:30pm and there is no official report of who will start tonight, but my guess would be the Senior Peters who has experience. I like for Toledo to win this one 38-20 but for the Falcons to cover.
